Protecting a post or page with a password

In the “Write” or “Manage” tab, whether you are writing/editing a page or post, there will be a “post password” section on the right of the editor.

If you type a password there and save, the visitors to your blog will see a prompt to enter a password in order to view your post or your page.

If you want to remove the protection, just edit the page and remove the password from the “Post Password” box.

Keep in mind that this is light protection, not the safest there is.

Posting images

There are several ways to post images:

  • Post images in your Wordpress Photo Gallery
  • Upload images for your post
  • Embed images from online photo sites such as Photobucket or Picasa

Audio upload & embedding

Steps for audio upload and embedding are the same as the ones for video upload. Two notes of caution:

  • Only MP3 audio format has been tested so far.
  • The online flash-based player requires MP3s to be encoded either at 11khz, 22khz or 44khz.
Otherwise they will play at twice the speed. Entertaining, but not very useful.

Cross-browser compatibility

This website was developed with constant testing in Firefox 2.0.0.4 and in Internet Explorer 7. On 07/05/2007 additional testing in IE6 corrected formatting issues. Testing in Opera showed appropriate behavior. IE 5.5 is still unfixed (drop-down menus don’t align right, website is all left-aligned instead of centered). But hey, maybe it’s time to upgrade if you’re still running IE 5.5.

According to the statistics of visitors to this website, about 97% use the browsers mentioned above (except IE 5.5), another 2% Netscape (usually compatible with FF), and the remaining 1% Opera, Safari, IE 5.5 and others.

Known bugs, quirks, differences between browsers:

  • Mozilla/Firefox do not allow pasting into a browser window. To paste formatted text use the “paste from word” icon in the toolbar.
  • Opera has limitations
    • Editing may result in incorrect wrapping of posts, somehow running off the page.
    • There are no “resize” small squares around a picture to allow for resizing
    • There is no drag and drop in the “visual” window.
  • Videos currently may not work in Safari (may be a mac issue rather than a browser issue)
